Looking for a great solution to dry patchy skin.?

My 3 year old has the worst dry skin ever. I put baby oil, lotion, dry skin cream... I have tried so many different kinds of lotion. Doctor said that it was eczema (skin hardening, scaling and cracking) when she was younger and wanted me to put hydrocortisone 1% cream on it twice per day but I have heard that it can thin her skin and give her more chances of getting skin cancer at a later age. She cries and makes herself bleed from scratching so much. Help! Does anyone know what could help my little girl?

I can totally relate to this, I have the same problem myself. First, I would use the cortisone cream. I have never heard that it was bad. The creams that thin the skin are usually only available with a prescription. I've used Cortisone for as long as I can remember and I am 34, I've never had a issue. Next get a tub of Eucerin and after you give her a bath put a thick layer on each spot then cover it with gauze until it soaks into the skin. Other things that you can try are Oatmeal Baths this will help the itching. Look at some of the Aveeno products they are great and help with the itching. If you can not get it under control on your own then I would go see a dermatologist. They have photo therapy treatment that will get rid of it. do some research of your own about PUVA and other Photo therapy treatments. Good luck

I don't know about eczema, but Vaseline works wonders on any dry skin my daughter gets. Her skin, especially on her cheeks, gets dry, red, and chapped during the cold weather, ever since she was very little. She's now 2 yrs. I rub some on at night, and you can see an improvement by morning. Maybe it would be something for you to try, since you've tried so many other things. And it certainly won't do any harm. Also, my mom told me when I used hydrocortisone cream on my daughter once, to use .5% instead of 1%, and only use a touch.
Reply:hi

my granddaughter had this problem, too.

we used aveeno products on her skin morning and night, and we also used the aveeno bath product. it gave her some relief.

if you do a search, you might find Home Remedies for Eczema on line? it's worth a try?

i hope you get some good answers here. take care.
Reply:the hydrocortizone is your best bet. the amount in the lotion isn't going to hurt her. someone is always going to find something bad in everything. don't be an alarmist. that little bit only twice a day won't cause anything. it isn't like she'll be living on it. you'll only need to use it for a few days. isn't easing her pain now more important?
Reply:I have this problem myself and have battled it off and on my whole life. Continue to use the cortizone twice a day...and I'd stay with the 1% for her age. I also use Eucerin cream at night....I don't use it during the day because of it's greasy look and feel...but it works great. During the day try the Aveeno line of products for Ecsema....this will help tremendously with the itching! If you follow this routine you should start to see results in about a week. Another thing to remember is that water dries the skin....so until this gets under control don't let her sit in the bath for a long period of time...and if she hasn't been outside and is not really dirty, I'd sponge bathe her on some days for a couple weeks until it starts to get better! Once you get it a little more under control, you can continue with the Eucerin at night and the Aveeno during the day as needed for itching!
