Who are these people who skinned cats? What would they use a cat fur for? Big cats, okay, I have seen like tiger skins. But wouldn't the saying then be "there is more than one way to skin a tiger"?
"There is more than one way to skin a cat" WHO IS SKINNING CATS? WHY SKIN A CAT?
Interesting question and quite rightly put into the Religion and Spirituallity section.
Some say that this term comes from the skinning of catfish, and it then turned into simply skinning a cat. Cat may have been a shortened form of catfish.
I didn't know that Koreans eat cat, although I do know that they and the Chinese eat dog. It is quite dangerous for a dog to be roaming the streets alone in Seoul or any other Korean city. Dangerous for the dog, that is.
In Japan, the musical instrument, the shamisen, are made with cat skin, but I doubt if that had anything to do with the English expression, "skin a cat." It is interesting though.
Most people, whether Christian or Buddhist or Muslim or whatever, would like to think there is only one way to skin a cat. And, in fact, many would like to think they KNOW there is only one way. Your question makes me wonder: as miniscule pieces of dust in this huge universe, aren't humans much too proud of themselves and their tiny brains? And isn't KNOWING what can't be known just a sign of this pride? If Buddhists are right, do Hindus have to be wrong?
(and blah blah blah)
"There is more than one way to skin a cat" WHO IS SKINNING CATS? WHY SKIN A CAT?
skinning a cat is slang for ways to climb a tree or to get up onto a tree branch---really.
Reply:I have no idea. Perhaps someone just made it up because they needed the phrase and there was a cat in the room, and it caught on because it's so weird. But yeah, it's pretty inhumane to skin cats, especially since the fur would be largely useless.
Reply:cat fur used to be used commonly in things like glove linings. this was in europe up until about 100 years ago.
Reply:Many Asians eat cat. It is part of their culture. Never go to Korea if this idea upsets you, because they skin the cat before they eat it.
Reply:I don't know who coined that expression. However my guess is that it was not a cat lover.
