my M, 9 month old poodle, has been itching alot in one area, at the top of his shoulder. we just noticed today that he has a bald spot and the skin seems to be darker than his actual fur color. He also has some kind of yellow crust on his skin.
We have NO idea what it could be and we're going to get him to a vet as soon as possible but any suggestions woud be great =)
We have taken him to a dog park before, if this helps at alll...
Heres a picture of it:

Help! dog skin problem????
First thing that comes to mind ...
Do you use a topical flea/tick or heartworm preventative?
Do you put it in that spot?
Second thing
Has a vaccine ever been administered in that location?
Third thing
Have a vet do a skin scraping and fungal culture to rule out bugs.
Glad your going to the vet.
I hope you get your answer
Help! dog skin problem????
your dog may have fleas or lice from grass the way to solve it is to use a formaula vets give u
Reply:That is from scrathching the flea or bug bites. If they scatch at it to much the hair will fall out. Just give hjim a flea bath and get a flea collar. Also th e power.
Reply:probably has an allergy.. my westie does that and she is allergic to wheat in her dog food so we have to check labels before we buy her food.
put some hydrocortisone cream on it and change out her food.
Reply:i've heard this called a 'hot spot'. they keep itching a spot and make it bleed. so hmm, have you tried something to take the itch away? maybe you should look at the pet store for some cream or ointment for it. we have used one from there for our two dogs. try to keep him from itching it as much as you can. good luck
Reply:Could be anything. A food allergy, maybe he had a flea on him and has flea allergies, shampoo allergies (especially if its a terrier breed). It could even be the mange (yeah I know, scary!). But the vet...even a groomer, can tell you what it is! The Best Of Luck to you and your doggie!!
Reply:take him to the vet is my only sugestion

Reply:It looks like an allergy to me. We had a dog that had the same problem but she was REALLY old -- I loved her so much. The vet said it could actually be an allergy to grass, fleas, etc. but it would cost a LOT of money to find out what the allergy was. She lost a lot of hair on her rear area before she passed.
Reply:Mange young lady...

Reply:I have 2 poodles. One has pink skin and one has dark grey skin. Both have white hair.
Both will find a spot to chew and lick. I think this is a food allergy, probably to the preservatives in commercial food. Since I have been feeding them chicken necks both raw and cooked plus ground beef, they are both lots better.
If you have lots of money, take him to a vet. If not, change the food and see what happens. From the photo he is not inflammed or infected.
Reply:Try to keep it clean but don't pick at it. I would suggest getting Bitter Apple spray so he doesn't chew or pick at it himself. Get him to the vet asap and don't worry, it's probably something that will clear up soon!
Reply:Do you have any other pets? Could it possibly be ring worm? Check the link below. But definately requires a visit to the vet.
Reply:If you have any anti-fungal cream or an aloe cream until you see the vet it may help. Make sure you go to the vet, it could be ringworm, or some kind of mites or just dry skin.
Reply:Take him to the vet. My dog had something similar, it wasn't allergies (and on top of the shoulder is a rare place for allergies but it still could be). My dog had a staph infection on the skin, that was self limiting to that area. After a few weeks of antibiotics he was better than ever.
But it could be a hot spot, flea allergies, allergies in general, or something else. Good luck!
Reply:he might have an infection or flea bite ask your vet immedatly to take care of this problem.
Reply:Possibly allergies. I'd try giving a bath and if its allergies that will temporarily stop the itching at least til you can get to a vet.
Reply:My dog had something similiar. She had these weird crusty scabs and when they fell off they had slight bald spots. I took her to the vet and she prescribed the antifungal shampoo malaseb. After a week she was fine. Ask your vet if that is a viable treatment and good luck!
Reply:get you some skin so soft from avon or you can use baby oil if you perfer that and some mane and tail conditioner mix a little mane and tail conditioner and baby oil in a spray bottle enough to fill 1/3 of the bottle then add 2/3 rds warm water shake very , very well and apply all over the dog 1 time daily
this is what i used to cure my pitbull in my avitar picture of hot spots it worked really well and the homemade skin and coat conditioner i made to put on him daily kept his skin from drying out plus he smelt great if his fur looks dull it will brighten up and looks so great and will be so lively
ggod luck these instructions should help him to feel much better
you can give him some benedryl for the itching too just call your vet and tell them the weight of your pooch so they can tell you what amount to give him
you can also use betadine to clean the are so it don't get infected and you can also use neosporin antibiotic cream
Reply:he's got a hot spot. a hot spot forms on a dog when they scratch and bite and chew in one place over adn over again. my dog gets em a lot. it scared us his first one cuz we had nooo idea wut it wuz. when we took him to the vet we found out that it wuz caused by meat. he's a vegetarian. we also found that he picked at his skin more when his hair was long. when we get him shaved it reduces his hot spots. that's wut it sounds and looks like 2 me. i'd still take him to the vet for propper treatment but i'm pretty sure that's wut it is.
